Laburnum Laburnum anagyroides

SMALL TREE THAT BEARS OYSTERS
Being only a small tree, laburnum is rarely available in anything but small dimensions. It is worth seeking out, however, for its distinctive heartwood, which quickly darkens to a golden brown, while the sapwood remains much paler. The heartwood can be used for turning but is most commonly cut across the grain to be used as oyster veneer. For that reason it has to be seasoned carefully as there is a risk of end splits and checks. The grain pattern is not dissimilar to that of wenge (Millettia laurentii).
